Like your health, your credit also needs a regular check-up. Did you know you can do this annually, free of charge?

Your credit is one of the most important assets you have. Identity theft is becomming one of the most rampant and devistating crimes of this century. Checking your credit at least once a year can help avoid identity theft. In addition it gives you the opporutnity to correct any errors that may exist on your credit profile.

There are three consumer credit reporting agencies; Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. These three nationwide companies have always encouraged consumers to regularly review their credit reports. Now, thanks to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) consumers have to be able to request and obtain a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the consumer credit reporting companies. In keeping with FACT, these three companies joined forces to provide consumers with a fast and convenient way to request, view and print their credit reports in a secure Internet environment; AnnualCreditReport.com. And for those who do not have internet access or who are concerned about the security of the internet, credit reports can also be requested by telephone and by mail. To request your credit reports by phone, call toll free 1 877 FACT ACT (1 877-322-8228).

Be careful (See note at bottom of this page) of other web sites that claim to offer free credit reports. Most of these use the offer of free reports as bait to get you to sign up for a credit monitoring service that they offer for a monthly fee. They generally provide that service free of charge for the first 30 days and then will charge you each and every month until you cancel the service.

One more warning about obtaining your free credit reports. There is a distinct difference between getting your credit reports and your credit scores (also known as your FICO score). Everyone will charge you to get you FICO score, even AnnualCreditReport.com. So, if you are curious about what your FICO score is, plan to pay a small amount (if I remember right they charge is $4.95 per Credit Reporting Agency)

I recently visited AnnualCreditReport.com to review my credit reports. Check out my experience, you might find it to be helpful before you visit AnnualCreditReport.com.
